Auto Parts FAQs

Are auto-parts from different manufacturers interchangeable?

As a general rule it is not a good idea to use a Toyota auto part for a Ford auto part and vice versa. However, in some circumstances this can be done successfully. For example, the Chevrolet Geo Prism is modeled after the Toyota Corolla and in many instances uses the same parts. Therefore, if you have an older Prism you may be able to use Corolla parts from a junkyard successfully.

How do aggregate junkyard Web sites work?

Most junkyards now keep their inventory electronically. They submit the contents of their inventory to an aggregate site. The site then posts to the public what is available in junkyards all across the country. The consumer can look up his state, and see what is available without ever leaving the house. Still, it's a good idea to call the junkyard to make sure the part is there and reserve it before you make the trip.

Do I need to replace car parts?

All auto parts wear out over time. It's much less expensive to do preventative maintenance and take good care of your car than to replace auto parts after they've broken. Check your owner's manual for a routine set of tasks you should perform to keep your car healthy. Also, your yearly auto inspection will reveal any major problems with auto parts.
